#27 : Chains of Abeir | A Dragonborn Rescue Mission Across Worlds: A D&D 5e One-Shot Adventure for 2-3 Players | Level 4
Your people are in chains on the other side of reality. You have hours to save who you can.
Chains of Abeir is a complete D&D 5e one-shot adventure designed specifically for 2-3 players at level 4. A dimensional rift has torn open in a mountain cave, revealing Abeir — the twin world where dragonborn never won their freedom. On the other side: a mining complex, hundreds of enslaved dragonborn, armed overseers, and a dragon overlord circling above. Your small team crosses through with one mission — rescue as many as you can before the rift closes forever.
The World That Was Left Behind
In D&D lore, dragonborn originally come from Abeir — a mirror world where dragon overlords ruled absolutely and dragonborn existed as slaves. When the worlds separated, some dragonborn crossed to Toril and built free lives. But not all of them made it. On Abeir, nothing changed. The overlords still rule. The chains never broke. Generations have been born, lived, and died without ever seeing a blue sky. Chains of Abeir asks what happens when the free dragonborn discover their cousins are still in chains — and the door between worlds won't stay open long.
What Makes This Adventure Different
This is not a dungeon crawl with a boss at the end. The mining complex contains six locations, but you only have time for three. Every choice means abandoning something that matters.
The Chain Pits hold sick, elderly, and children — the easiest rescue, the most vulnerable people. The Sorrow Quarry holds thirty able-bodied miners under heavy guard — the hardest fight, the largest group. The Archive of Scales contains centuries of bloodline records that can reunite families across worlds. The Overseer's Vault holds a legendary weapon that tilts the final confrontation in your favor. The Hatchery protects eight unhatched eggs — the next generation. The Crystal Store offers a fortune in dragonshards or the chance to cripple the operation permanently.
You cannot do it all. What you choose defines who you are.
The Boss Who Believes He's Right
The path back to the rift is blocked by Drazen — a dragonborn who chose collaboration over chains. He commands the overseers. He wears stolen dragonborn weapons. And he genuinely believes he is protecting the slaves from something worse. You can fight him, persuade him, or deceive him. If you raided his vault, he's weaker. If you didn't, he's dangerous.
Then the Dragon Lands
This is not a combat encounter. This is a force of nature reminding you how small you are. The overlord lands on the ridge. You run. The rift closes behind you. And in the last narrowing gap, a single enormous eye watches you go. It is not angry. It is curious.
