Rudolf Dittrich (1861-1919) was an Austrian musician and composer. He is known for his role in bringing Western music to Japan during the late 19th century. Dittrich studied at the Vienna Conservatory under notable teachers like Anton Bruckner. He later served as the first Art Director of the Tokyo School of Music (now the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music).

"A Lenten Supplication" is one of Dittrich's compositions, written for a brass quintet. This piece was intended to be played during Lent church services, capturing the reflective and solemn nature of the season. The composition is known for its emotional depth and soothing qualities, making it a favorite in religious and concert settings.
