Designed to go with the Backroad Hats and the Backroad Scarves, the Backroad Mittens use the same stretchy slip-stitch rib, and are designed for worsted weight yarn. The mittens are worked in the round from the cuff, with a thumb gusset at the side; the gusset instructions are both written and charted. The mitten body is finished with a 3-needle bind off. The recommended yarn is a springy, 3-ply wool yarn with a relatively tight twist: soft and lofty yet durable.

About the Yarn
Widdershin Woolworks Targhee Worsted is a springy, 3-ply yarn with a fairly tight twist. Targhee is an American sheep breed with wool that is almost as soft as Merino and more durable. Targhee’s elasticity, strength, and staple length, combined with this yarn’s twist, give a lofty, springy yarn with crisp stitch definition that resists pilling: an excellent mitten yarn. It is still a fine wool, so I wouldn’t wear these mittens to dig ditches, but it will wear better than Merino with normal mitten use.
