What am I buying?

It's an original digital 21 page, easy to follow, professionally tech edited, printable PDF pattern to crochet your own Striped Giraffe, including 16 photos showing him from all angles.

Please note - you're NOT buying a finished toy - you are buying a digital pattern to crochet your own Amigurumi character!

The pattern's written in English - available in both US and UK Crochet Terms - please select from the options above.

US and UK Crochet Terms are NOT the same - make sure you buy the version of this pattern that uses the terms you're familiar with, otherwise your finished character will be distorted.

Familiar with the term "sc" for Single Crochet? Then you're used to patterns written in US Terms.

If the patterns you usually use do not feature "sc" for Single Crochet, then you're used to patterns written in UK Terms.

How difficult is the pattern?

I'd say the Striped Chums patterns are for "experienced intermediate" crocheters - a little more challenging than my usual patterns as there's several colours of yarn to manage. Some parts are worked in Joined Rounds to give clean colour changes between the stripes without an ugly step. Full instructions are given plus a link to a Photo Tutorial on the website showing the principle of joined rounds. Still not sure? Have a look at my Happy Spider, Gecko or Kiwi free patterns on my main website so see what a pattern written in Joined Rounds looks like.

I'm always happy to help by email if anything puzzles you!

What stitches & techniques are used?

  • Magic Ring
  • UK double crochet/US single crochet
  • Chain
  • Slip Stitch
  • Increasing/Decreasing
  • Working in Joined Rounds
  • Basic embroidery techniques
  • The parts are crocheted separately and then sewn together.

How big will the finished item be?

Approx 49cm/19in from top to toe when made using a 2mm hook with the yarn specified below.

You can scale this pattern up or down by altering the yarn and hook. Use a heavier weight yarn and larger hook for a bigger Striped Giraffe and a lighter weight yarn and smaller hook for a little one. The pattern includes a link to a Scaling a Pattern tutorial on the website.

What yarn do I need?

My Striped Giraffe was made with Scheepjes Catona 4ply, 100% Cotton, 125m per 50g.

MC: 100g approx of Light Coral (264) - Body, Head, Arms, Legs, Ears, Eye Lids & Tail.

CC1: 50g approx of Brick Red (504) - Body, Head, Arms, Legs, Mane Pieces & Tail.

CC2: 25g approx of Watermelon (252) - Body, Head, Arms, Legs, Mane Pieces, Horns, Spots & Tail.

CC3: 25g approx of Old Lace (130) - Body, Head, Arms, Legs, Eye Balls, Eye Highlight & Tail.

CC4: 20g approx of Cherry (413) - Body, Head, Arms, Legs, Mane Pieces, Horns & Tail.

CC5: Small amount of Jet Black (110) - Pupils & Embroidered Details.

A cotton yarn works well for Ami as it gives good stitch definition and creates a firm structure so body parts hold their shape well. Catona is a relatively thick 4 ply (US: Sport) - you can substitute a DK Cotton (US: DK/Light Worsted) with a similar amount of meters per 50g.

Don't forget, using an alternative yarn may alter the amount of yarn needed in each colour.

What about Tension/Gauge?

27 sts x 30 rows = 10cm/4in measured over UK dc (US sc) using 2mm hook with Scheepjes Catona 4 ply cotton.

Tension/Gauge is not critical for this project but stitches should be tight enough to avoid stuffing showing through.

What size Hook do I need?

I used a 2mm hook for the above yarn.

I wanted a firm finish. If you prefer a softer, squidgy finish, go up to a 3mm hook - your Giraffe will be softer but will come out slightly larger and you'll use a little more yarn.

You may need to go up or down a hook size depending on your own natural tension when crocheting.

What other supplies are needed to make the Striped Giraffe?

A yarn needle for sewing the parts together and toy stuffing, stitch markers (or waste yarn), pins and scissors.
