It can be easy to ignore the environmental sounds around us, to let them blur into the background. But if we take some time to listen more deeply, to allow our ears to adjust, the music of our surrounding begins to emerge.

Under The Moon, Boats Whisper is inspired by evening walks beside Lake Geneva, listening to the gentle clinking of boats in the breeze. To make this experience part of the music, the opening motifs are based on the most prominent intervals, pitches and rhythms which I was able to discern. These are explored and later developed into melodic material.

Listening to the boats is something which I find very calming. I want this piece to engulf the listener in a comforting, soothing blanket of sound.

Under The Moon, Boats Whisper was created between September and October 2025 as part of Britten Sinfonia’s Opus 1 composer development programme.

Revised in 2026.

First performed by Britten Sinfonia at Kings Place London, 15th November 2025
