The Complexity Trap - Governance, Innovation and Collaboration in the Digital Age
Online services such as travel, insurance and banking increasingly depend on networks of independent organisations working together. As those networks grow, how do we preserve the benefits of collaboration without making services progressively harder to govern, adapt and improve?
The Complexity Trap: Governance, Innovation and Collaboration in the Digital Age explores that question and offers practical approaches for people designing, coordinating, regulating or participating in open ecosystems.
Throughout the book, governance means how collaboration is organised so that shared outcomes can be achieved. Technology makes connections possible, but successful services also depend on clear responsibilities, compatible standards, workable incentives and confidence between participants. As ecosystems expand, coordinating these arrangements can become a barrier to the innovation they were intended to support.
Drawing on my experience at the Open Banking Implementation Entity, the Financial Conduct Authority and international engagements, I examine how governance can evolve into an enabling capability: creating the conditions in which independent organisations can develop valuable services together.
The book introduces Scalable Ecosystem Governance Theory and develops practical methods for assessing consumer value, translating policy into operational requirements, clarifying responsibility across organisational boundaries and reducing duplicated effort through shared infrastructure. Appendices apply these ideas to the UK Smart Data programme and Korea’s MyData.
Although many examples come from financial services, the underlying questions extend into energy, healthcare, telecommunications and other services delivered through networks of organisations. The book is intended for public authorities, ecosystem coordinators, industry practitioners and researchers seeking to turn greater connectivity into sustainable public value.
Ultimately, the purpose of governance is not merely to prevent failure, but to enable success.
