Probably the most famous cytharas around...

The Stuttgart Psalter was made around 820 A.D. in the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Pres in Paris. It isn’t known who ordered the manuscript, but this abbey was under patronage of Charlemagne himself. Since the late 18th century the psalter it is kept in the Württembergische Landesbibliothek Stuttgart (Bibl. fol. 23).

In the manuscript are ten depictions a Cythara. By lining them up and comparing the shapes and sizes I could distillate them into two different models: The small ‘Peasant’ and larger ‘Royal’ model.

A set of two plans.
