I made this design to support the efforts to introduce again the "long lost" art and to introduce the one of the so many traditional weaving motifs in Indonesia. Original Kain Kapal used for this design:

Collection of MET Museum, Public Domain Picture. As you can see the dominant color is Red; the color for Kain Kapal belongs to the at least some middle rank nobility. Nobles and Royalties can have red, bright red colors and even woven with silver dan or gold threads, while the commoners mnostly own Kain Kapal with dominant dark blue color.

Kain Kapal or Ship Cloth, is one of the famous tenun tapis (tapis hand weaving) from Lampung province in Indonesia, place where I live. It has long history back to Dongsong era millenias ago. It once was declared as extinct textile art, but the traditional owners in coastal region of Lampung have been struggling to revive the craftsmanship since 1900s. Thanks to them, nowadays we have this motifs again in local weaving guilds, with the original natural and organic dyeing techniques still being in used.
