Caim is an Old Gaelic word that means “protecting” or “encircling.” Celtic Christians believed that time was circular, rather than linear, with God at the center of it. From this belief, they developed the Caim prayer, or circle prayer. This type of prayer is one where people form a circle around the person who needs protection and then recite simple requests to draw Good near and Evil afar. An individual may say the same prayer by drawing an imaginary circle around herself and reciting the prayer.

Regardless of your religious beliefs, it is hard to deny the benefits of a warm hug or a simple touch. Sometimes, it’s just the slightest weight of something over our shoulders that gives us that sense of calm. This fingering weight pi shawl is perfect for when you need to feel a comforting embrace. The lace motifs are all generally round, echoing the idea of Caim. The outermost lace pattern is also suggestive of arms stretching out to hold hands and encircle the body. Like praying hands placed on your shoulders, this generous shawl is sure to remind you that Good conquers Evil.

• 1,210 - 1,400 yd./1,100 - 1,280 m
• Fingering/4-ply
• BigFootFibers Super Silky Sheep (75% SW Merino, 25% Silk; 100 g; 437 yd./400 m).
• 3 skeins in Mrs. Skerrett.
• If you are a loose knitter or don’t often swatch for gauge, it is recommended to get a fourth skein of yarn or plan on binding off early.
• This blend has a beautiful sheen and shine, and feels soft and light against the skin. It has a good balance of memory and drape.

NEEDLES

• US 5 (3.75 mm) size 100 in./250 cm circular needle
• A long circular needle is recommended in order to accommodate the large number of stitches as the shawl grows.

GAUGE

• 28 sts and 32 rnds = 4 in./10 cm in St st on US 5 (3.75 mm) needle after blocking.
• Gauge is not crucial to this project, but varying gauges will affect yardage and final measurements.
