About the piece

"Postlude on Duke Street" is a brief, exuberant setting for organ of John Hatton's c. 1793 hymn tune. The piece is conceived around Samuel Medley's "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" (1775) and is intended for Easter Sunday or similar liturgical moments. It is a "rondo-lite:" a celebratory ritornello returns three times around two contrasting episodes that present the Duke Street tune. A final return of the ritornello closes the piece, with an optional zimbelstern marking the final phrase. Potentially effective as postlude, prelude, or (in truncated form) even as an introduction to the hymn itself.

Performance notes

Suggested registrations are printed. Registrations should bring out the contrast across the form: the descant episode rewards brilliance and clarity, while the chorale-texture episode wants a more introspective character on the Swell. Zimbelstern indicated at the close serves the piece's celebratory affect but is optional. The piece sits in the intermediate-to-advanced range.
