Three Equals Ten

Three charging cords. Seven left unused. One accusation that won’t go away.

At a shelter’s shared charging station, Shirley Grogan plugs in her phone, battery pack, and reading lamp. She needs to stay reachable for housing opportunities and keep a little light beside her bunk.

When another resident needs a compatible cord, Shirley offers a compromise. Alice demands that she unplug everything.

“Using three is the same as using all ten.”

What begins as a disagreement becomes a spreading accusation, turning an ordinary necessity into another source of anxiety. Already navigating appointments, bus schedules, and the search for a room, Shirley must decide how to stand her ground in a place where avoiding conflict can feel essential to getting through the day.

Three Equals Ten by Mia Bills is compelling contemporary fiction about entitlement, intimidation, shared resources, and the quiet courage of protecting reasonable boundaries.

How much of your life should you have to explain before someone respects your right to live it?
