This feelings task box builds the words for feelings in three levels: faces, real situations, and body clues with more exact words.

Why I made this: A lot of students can’t ask for what they need because they don’t have the words for what they feel yet. "I’m mad" covers everything from tired to embarrassed. This box builds the words one level at a time: faces, then situations, then body clues and more exact feeling words. Naming a feeling is the first step before a student can do anything about it.

What’s included (20 pages):

• Level A ●: 12 face picture cards to sort onto 6 feelings

• Level B ■: 24 situation cards to sort onto the feeling most people would have

• Level C ▲: 24 feeling clue cards with body clues and 7 more feeling words

• A feelings sorting mat, a "more feeling words" reference, and a body clues chart

• 3 practice pages, one for each level

• Answer key for every card

• Data sheet and a 10 session accuracy graph

• A try it for real page with an adult check

• Ideas for practicing at home and around school, and blank cards

How I use it: I use the mat for a quick check in every morning, then students work on their level in the task box during independent work. I take data on the data sheet and use the try it for real page to practice naming feelings during the real day.

Who it is for: Special education teachers in structured, self contained, and life skills classrooms, resource rooms, counselors, and paras, for students in grades 5 to 8 and older students who need the same skills.

What you download: Feelings Task Box Social Emotional.pdf (20 pages, US Letter, print ready)

How this is different: This is a structured task box with levels and data. Feeling Size Meter measures how big a feeling is; this box teaches students to name feelings from faces, situations, and body clues. My other social emotional products are scripts, picture cards, and staff tools. No text is shared.
