Initial Sounds Screening Test

Use this fun, simple initial sounds screening test to check that children not only know their initial sounds but can answer the question: What sound does _____ begin with?

Testing has been given a bad name, but it is vital that the teacher of phonics constantly ‘tests’ his/her pupils in an informal manner, for failure to do so can result in children being moved on too quickly and from my experience as a private tutor to those who have failed in literacy at school, far too often I find that the child has been asked to blend before being able to hear the initial sound of a word. This renders blending useless to the child.
