The kit tests:

• knowledge of initial sounds
• ability to sound out to read and spell CVC words
• Ability to sound out consonant blends
• Ability to read short sentences/passages with the above words.
• A reading age is determined by dong the Schonnell Reading Test

This is the test I use to help me decide where to start working with a child when s/he is referred to me for help. In most cases, even with an older child, I find that there are gaps in a child's ability/knowledge at this level which need correcting before we can move onto assess Level 1 ability.
