The Reading Made Simple Level 1 Spelling Programme teaches not only spelling but writing also, to those aged 7 plus who can already read.

Teaching one lesson a week, this course forms a year's spelling instruction.

It can also be used as a remedial spelling (and/or reading programme) for those who have hitherto failed with other programmes, including those with dyslexia.

This pack includes:

  1. The Teaching Manual Level 1, providing full teaching instructions, the weekly lesson plan and teaching notes for each lesson
  2. The set of worksheets for older pupils
  3. The Word Lists for each lesson
  4. Phonic Flashcards
  5. Odd Word Flashcards

All are supplied in PDF format.

Spelling worksheet exercises include:

Tracking

Tracking trains the eye to see the new sounds in words. This is very important as a means of helping the child to become familiar with the spelling patterns.

Questions:

The questions help the child to think about what has been read. If possible, answers should be written, with help given to spell any words needed that the child cannot yet spell. If need be, the answers can be given verbally.

Labelling pictures

The child should say the word, identify the sound and then write the letters needed to make those sounds in that word.

Also, attention should be paid to the number of articles and this should be included in the label if there are more than one.

Be the teacher:

These exercises train children to think “ Does it look right?” as well as to spot mistakes. Ultimately, we want them to spot their own mistakes, but this is a pressure-free way in which to train them to do so - as they did not make them! It can also be quite fun!

The worksheets follow the same systematic structure as Level 1 of Reading Made Simple, a 100% free reading and writing programme for all ages and abilities.

Because of its highly structured nature, Reading Made Simple is suitable for use where other programmes have failed.

Due to the highly structured, systematic nature of the programme, it is suitable for use by (and has been tried and tested by) parents who:

  • Wish to help their child catch up with schoolwork in reading or writing or both
  • Need a programme to help a child with a processing difficulty (such as dyslexia) read and/or spell
  • Are looking for a home-education writing curriculum for KS1 and 2
