Backstory: The time period is from 1810 to 1830. The country is a type of new America. But the key difference within this history and traditional American history, white people are the slaves and people of color are the slave masters. At this point in time, slave masters are casually eferenced as "townspeople." White slaves are often referred to as "caulkers." What makes this book so "real" is where the authors artfully demonstrate this inverted American history in such explicit detail, that it is almost certain to shock your system.
The story is narrated by two older women from this period, recounting their personal life experiences as children in the slaved southern part of the country. One of the women is a former white slave and the other is a former slave master of African descent. This period of time is not one often favored by descendants of era in light of the memories relating to their hated past. From another perspective, it represents a time-honored period that people of color often relish within their reminiscing.
The book begins with a heinous act committed by a slave against a young, pivotal member of the community. The authors exquisitely illustrate how a single offense, committed at the appropriate or most inappropriate time, can transform the cultural fabric and beliefs of an entire nation.
