Run the VILLA BORGHESE park

The gardens of the Villa Borghese were designed by Cardinal Borghese to enhance the villa he had built to house his art collection. In 1605, he had a vineyard transformed into lush, shady gardens dotted with numerous fountains. The whole complex was completed in 1633. It would later become the city's first 'English garden'.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the government bought the property and handed it over to the city, which turned it into a municipal park open to the public. There are several museums here, including the Galeria Borghese, which contains one of the finest collections in the world, in the original villa. There is also the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Villa Medici and a zoo.

We guide you there from the Piazza del Popolo, and before entering the park, you'll be offered a short diversions before climbing the hill. Along a quiet side street, you'll be taken up the Piazza di Spagna famous steps. You'll then be guided into the park itself, where you'll start by enjoying a sublime view of the city and St Peter's Cathedral from the Pincio Terrace. Then you will run the beautiful pathways that lead you from fountains to small lakes, notably the one where the small Temple of Aesculapius stands on an island. Of course, you won't miss the gardens and main buildings of this sandy park, shaded by majestic umbrella pines.

Les jardins de la Villa Borghèse sont réalisés sur les plans du cardinal Borghese pour agrémenter la villa qu'il s'était fait construire afin d'y abriter sa collection d'art. En 1605, il fait transformer un vignoble en jardins verdoyants et ombragés parsemés de nombreuses fontaines. L'ensemble est terminé en 1633. On y installera plus tard le premier “jardin à l’anglaise” de la ville.

Au début du XXème siècle, le gouvernement rachète la propriété et la cède à la ville, qui en fait un parc municipal ouvert au public. On y trouve plusieurs musées, dont la Galeria Borghese, qui contient une des plus belles collections du monde, dans la villa initiale. On y trouve aussi notamment le Musée d’art moderne et contemporain, la Villa Medicis, ainsi qu’un parc zoologique.

Vous y accédez depuis la Piazza del Popolo, et avant d’entrer dans le parc, on vous offre un petit détour avant de monter sur la colline. Par une petite rue tranquille, on vous emmène escalader les fameux escaliers de la Piazza di Spagna. Puis on vous guidera pour pénétrer dans le parc proprement dit, où vous commencerez par profiter d’une sublime vue sur la ville et la Cathédrale St-Pierre depuis la Terrasse du Pincio. Puis ce sont de belles allées qui vous mèneront de fontaines en petits lacs, notamment celui où le petit Temple d’Esculape est érigé sur une île. Vous ne manquerez évidemment pas les jardins et édifices principaux de ce parc au sol sablonneux,ombragé de pins parasols majestueux.
