FREE Picture Prompt Stories | Wishing-Well Creative Writing Activity
One wishing well. A whole class of original stories!
Try this free picture-prompt writing activity to help children turn one picture into their own story. Children talk about what they see, decide which part of the story the picture represents, then complete a quick plan using pictures or words before writing.
Your free download includes:
• A four-page A4 portrait PDF
• A matching cover with a finished story example
• A five-step photo guide with discussion questions and teaching tips
• A four-box quick plan and story writing space on one sheet
• One wishing-well picture prompt with 20 cut-out copies for classroom use
The picture can belong in any planning box: Where? Who? What happens? or How does it end? There is no single right answer—children use their imaginations to create a connected story.
The guidance includes sounding out words, punctuation reminders and setting personal writing targets. Children can draw and tell their story, dictate to an adult or write independently.
Printing: A4 portrait at actual size (100%). The cover and photo instructions are in colour; pupil sheets are black and white. Print the planning sheet and cut out one wishing-well picture for each child.
Free digital PDF download. No physical product will be sent.
