Turn On The Heat
From the 1929 musical film “Sunny Side Up“ comes this Tea-For-Two reminiscent song “Turn On The Heat". The song hasn't become a well-known standard and one can only imagine it must've been an extremely popular song of its day to explain why Fats even recorded it. Though hearing Fats play anything is a joyous experience, this is no exception.
Some enormous intervals are played here (see*) in both hands! Not just tenths but 11ths in the LH and 4-note tenth chords in the RH, all resulting in a full, rich pipe organ-like sound. Adapt these chords to suit your own hands.
Of note is the "Lite” stride left-hand technique at C featuring broken tenth triads creating a nice contrast in the texture and slight rest for the left hand (not that Fats needed it!) On top of this Fats adds an incredibly bluesy single-note solo before returning to full stride texture. A great way to build tension and drama in a performance!
