Ophthalmic Theatre Nurse Upskill Training Program
A four week structured skill training intervention
The skilled nursing shortage is a global issue that sees the most seasoned healthcare management juggling business growth and providing a skilled workforce to support that growth. Recruiting experienced nurses is becoming more complex, an issue that can limit the growth of the business and challenge the delivery of safe and quality care to patients.
The purpose is to provide the healthcare facility, such as a day hospital, a framework for disseminating and implementing a structured, fast-tracked upskill training program that:
- Engages the novice nurse with no previous operating theatre experience
- Mitigate the risk of disruption - increase skill mix
- Takes the 'train your own' approach - upskill your current or new nursing staff
- Engage staff - skilled staff retention and skill mix
- Refers and maps to Australian Standards - ACORN, AONANC and NSQHS Standards
- Increase patient safety
This free download is an example of the program with the four-week modules and is an example of the learning material provided to the learning staff.
As the learning material has been designed for use by healthcare facilities to assist with the upskilling of staff, the training program, in its entirety, should only be used by nurse educators with in-depth knowledge of best practices and the Australian College of Perioperative Nurses Standards.
The complete upskill training program consists of:
- Adaptable format - change content to reflect facility policies and processes
- Educator/Instructor - training program guidance and editing instruction
- Pre and post-program Quiz
- Pre and post-program Quiz - adaptable format and answer guide
- Clinical assessment criteria
