Sentence Starters for the Victorian Kindergarten Learning Progressions

Subtitle

Free. All eight domains, all 49 levels.

Description

The Kindergarten Learning Progressions describe children's learning across eight domains, and each domain has five to seven levels written in fairly dense departmental language. Locating a child along those levels is reasonable work. Turning that into a sentence about the child you watched at the climbing frame this morning is the part that takes the time, particularly at the end of the term when there are statements waiting.

This pack gives you the first half of the sentence. Every level in every domain has four observation stems that you finish with what you saw, plus a Next step line for your planning, written one level above what the child managed on their own.

I put it together as an early childhood teacher who has had the trifold open on one side of the desk and an empty documentation field on the other. It works on placement, in your first year in a kinder room, and on the Friday afternoon when you have six statements left.

Inside, 12 pages

  • Eight domains, each mapped to its VEYLDF outcome
  • 49 progression levels with plain English labels
  • 196 observation sentence starters
  • 49 Next step lines for planning
  • An index of every level, so you can scan for the child in front of you
  • One moment taken through Observe, Assess and Plan
  • A table of weak phrases with what to write instead

Who it is for

Victorian kindergarten teachers and educators writing observations, learning stories and Transition Learning and Development Statements, and students on placement in Victorian services. If English is your second language, the stems carry the sentence structure so your attention stays on the child.

About the source
