When winter is at its coldest, scarves and shawls may need a bit less lace and more coverage. Distal is a reversible shawl that covers even your most distant limbs! Wrap Distal like a scarf or a cowl, over your head, around your neck, your face, or hanging down for ornamentation instead. The lofty, light texture of Létt-Lopi, an aran-weight single ply wool, creates a draped, lacy effect when knitted on larger needles. This asymmetrical shape is a quick knit, requiring only simple stockinette knitting, yarn overs, decreasing, and other basic skills. Use your crochet skills for an optional single crochet edging or add your own knit one as a finishing touch.

Accessibility Note: This pattern offers an additional Low Vision pdf option, with Arial 24 point font and photo captions, for those who need large print.

Distal is flexible: adjust the yarn type and weight and gauge by choosing a needle two sizes larger than called for and create a design all your own. With approximately 327 yards (300 meters) of aran weight and size 10 (6mm) needles, the shawl measures approximately 53” long by 25” in depth.

Finished Measurements of Distal:
An asymmetric triangular shape, measuring approximately 53” (132.5cm) long, with a depth of 25” (62.5cm)—this pattern is stretchy, so blocked measurements will vary.

Length and width of scarf will vary according to your yarn choice and needle size.

Materials:
Yarn:
Approximately 327 yards (300 meters) of aran weight yarn
Note: This shawl pattern is easily adjustable should you choose to use more or less yarn, simply increase to more than 70 sts or less according to your yardage.

Notes for adjusting yarn and needle size used in this project:
• Use more yards of any weight yarn for a longer/wider shawl.
• Use more yards of a lighter weight yarn for roughly the same size as the sample.
• If using a heavier yarn, choose a bigger needle size in order to maintain the open nature of the shawl.
• If you’d like a warmer shawl, create a more dense fabric by choosing a needle size closer to the manufacturer’s suggestion on the ballband.

Sample Used:
3 skeins Létt-Lopi, 100% wool, 109 yards (100m), 1.76 oz (50g) color Ivory

Needles:
Size 10 (6mm) straight or circular knitting needle or size to get desired gauge
Optional: Size H (5mm) crochet needle or size to create a firm single crochet edging

Notions Required:
Tape measure
Row Counter
Tapestry needle
Blocking pins, if desired

Gauge:
11 sts and 16 rows=4” (10cm) in stockinette stitch
Note: This gauge is approximate; a wool shawl can be blocked to a larger or smaller gauge depending on the individual knitter. It’s not necessary to calculate gauge to knit this design; if you like how it looks, keep knitting!
