George Richard Raymond Martin was born on September 20, in New Jersey, he is a short story writer, novelist, producer, scenarist, journalist, and a professor of journalism. He is also a fan of chess and organized many competitions. He is very famous for his international bestselling series: “A Song of Ice and Fire” which was adapted recently by HBO for the TV series “Game of Thrones”. He sold his first story in 1971 and since then exhibited a profound talent and passion for writing. He had been working on many films and television series in Hollywood, such the Beauty and the Beast, and The Twilight Zone. Today he is living in Santa Fe, New Mexico with his wife Parris MacBride, and Augustus and Caligula, his two cats. He was named amongst the 100 most influential people in the world in 2011 by “Time Magazine”.

The author began his career in writing very early. He started selling short stories at the age of 21. After successfully selling and publishing “The Hero”, other sales followed. He also wrote many short stories one of them “With Morning Comes Mistfall », which was published in 1973 by Analog magazine, and was his first work to be on the Hugo Awards and Nebula Awards nominees. Shortly afterward, he was again nominated and won a “Best Novella” Hugo Award for his tale “A Song for Lya” in 1975. A short story that was inspired to Martin by his first serious and romantic relationship. It talks about two telepaths, Robb and Lyanna visiting a planet whose inhabitants commit mass suicide by worshiping a mold-like organism.

The following year, Martin published his first novel “After the Festival ». However, the original title changed before its first hardcover publication to “Dying of The Light”. A science fiction novel that was nominated for the Hugo Award for best novel in 1978, and the British Fantasy Award in 1979. In this book, Martin’s obsession with killing his main characters appears clearly, as many of this novel’s characters die by the end of the war that takes place under the dying light falling on Worlorn, the dying planet of the Kavalar race, morally complex humans who live strange lives and follow their own agenda.

Martin’s works, so often, feature brutality, violence, sexuality, and religion, with usually unhappy and unsatisfied characters. Although fantasy and horror are his best categories of writing, some of his previous works are fiction tales taking part in some future history. He also wrote a political fiction “Night of the Vampyres”. In general, he loves to create complicated, but realistic characters, and throw them into masterfully handed plots, this is the reason he was compared to Tolkien, and called “The American Tolkien” by “Time Magazine”.

His characters are multi-factorial, more real and unpredictable. None of them is sheltered from sudden death, misfortune, or injury, and when asked about this “obsession” he explained: “People die in wars. People get maimed in wars, and many of them are good, likable people who you would like to not see die”

Martin won many other awards for his works: His story “Sandkings” won a Hugo and a Nebula Award in 1980. In the same year, another Hugo Award was granted to him for the best short story “The Way of Cross and Dragon”. In 1986, he was, again, awarded another Nebula award for his Novelette “Portrait of his children”. And other awards related to his best work “A Song of Ice and Fire” series books have been added to his huge selection of prizes and trophies acknowledging the fact that he is a great novelist, with a very apparent taste for fascinating characters, great dialogues, and perfect pacing as described by the “Los Angeles Times”.

A Game of Thrones:

This is the first novel in the high fantasy series “A Song of Ice and Fire” written by GRRM. It begins in the year 298AC (After Conquest) as winter approaches and menaces to last for four decades. Several noble Houses fight over the throne of the seven kingdoms. Meanwhile, the Others Beyond the Wall prepare to march South. As Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell comes to act as the King’s Councilor and try to defend him against the dangerous men and women conspiring against his kingdom, Daenerys, the daughter of the former king is preparing an army overseas in order to claim the throne: Her right of birth. The book also follows the story of Jon Snow, the “bastard” of Eddard Stark as he grows up in the north of Westeros, then serves at “the Night’s Watch” to protect the Seven Kingdoms from the dangers lurking behind the Wall. The center of the conflict is always the Starks Family of Winterfell. It is the start of a captivating tale of wars, kings, betrayals, lords, and ladies, sorcerers, and soldiers, each character’s fate hangs perilously in balance as everyone claims the throne.
