Winchester, Heart of a City

‘Winchester Heart of a City’ was launched in 2009 as a print only book and the City of Winchester Trust are now providing an electronic version for the book. The book is about the very historic city of Winchester and its Conservation Area. At the time it was published it was acclaimed for its very high quality.
 

The book was written by Andrew Rutter, now retired, who for many years was the Conservation Officer for Winchester City Council. The book covers all the streets within the Conservation area, providing images, historic context and architectural details. Andrew Rutter’s meticulous study of the city to which he devoted much of his working life, and the honest way in which he sets out both successes and failures, is a credit to his architect’s eye and his planner’s overview, which have both been supported by his ability to draw. The book has many of his sketches, alongside paintings, photographs and a wealth of historic illustrations.
