Colouring Peter Newell's Pictures and Rhymes - A Vintage Greyscale Colouring Book

About this eBook

The American illustrator Peter Newell is probably best known for his illustrations to the 1890 edition of Alice in Wonderland.

But he did not only create beautiful illustrations in a very unique style, at his time he was also known for his quirky, sometimes gentle and loving, and often tongue-in-cheek rhymes.

His "Pictures and Rhymes" were first published in 1899. I'm presenting you a new edition here, with the pictures reformatted to become a vintage greyscale colouring book. This edition also includes the text of the foreword of the original edition - a humouristic portrait of Peter Newell by author John Kendrick Bangs.

I hope you enjoy this gem as much as I do!

You get a printable PDF (300dpi resolution) with 61 pages. First comes an introduction with a thumbnail-sized overview of the Pictures, followed by 50 pages of Pictures and Rhymes at original size, which range from a bit smaller than postcard size to almost half a page.

Tips for printing

I have modified the images as a light greyscale, that means you can achieve colourful darks that won't be taken over by black printer ink. I suggest that you test your printer settings first with one of the pages.

For my inkjet printer I find that printing at Standard setting on plain printer paper makes the greyscale come out as it appears on the screen. Setting to High Quality or Matte or Glossy Photo Paper results in a much darker print, which gives it almost a hand-printed look. There is no "right or wrong", only a different outcome and personal preference.
