Staying Steady 2.0: Practical Tools to Interrupt Overwhelm While Building Endurance and Defiance Under Authoritarian Assault

Trump has a playbook. You need one too.

Your capacity to think, act, and stay connected is resistance infrastructure. That's exactly why it's under attack. Stress management and wellness content weren't built for political assault. You need counter-tactics matched to their playbook. This toolkit is built for what you're actually facing: sustained assault, manufactured chaos, deliberate destabilization.

What you get:

75+ pages. Ten complete practices across four sections. A hands-on workbook: checklists, self-assessments, mapping exercises, menus of concrete moves, and structured prompts you'll write in and return to. Built to be used in the middle of the chaos.

RECOGNITION (Seeing what's happening to you):

  • Recognize Overwhelm Early — rapid-scan checklist to identify your personal overwhelm patterns and early warning signals
  • Map Your Triggers Without Shame — structured worksheet to trace what activates you and whether your responses lead toward action or paralysis
  • Detect When You're Near Your Threshold — self-assessment to read accumulated load before something small breaks you
  • Recognize Reactive States — self-assessment to identify where you are in the cycle of collapsed overwhelm, numb cynicism, and scattered activism, plus a noting exercise to catch shifts in real time

RESCUE (When you're in it right now):

  • Interrupt Shame Before It Isolates You — mapping exercise to trace shame's pathways plus a menu of small moves to break the cycle before isolation sets in
  • Use Emergency Circuit Breakers — menu of specific tools organized by what's happening to you: body locked, frozen, panicking, doomscrolling, withdrawing
  • Doomscroll Rescue — menu of off-ramps organized by type of move: physical interrupts, cognitive interrupts, substitution moves, boundary moves

RESILIENCE (Cultivating capacity over time):

  • Cultivate Steadiness After the Spiral Stops — guided exercises to regain ground through body, values, and strategic mindfulness
  • Foster Connection and Navigate Risky Spaces — mapping exercises to identify who steadies you and structured prompts for setting boundaries where honesty costs too much

BUILDING (Endurance and defiance for the long fight):

  • Build Endurance and Defiance — skills inventory checklist revealing what you've already built, a weekly commitment exercise, and a personal declaration of what you refuse to accept

Plus: Quick Reference Card for when you can't think straight. "Try This with Others" prompts throughout. Designed to be used imperfectly—in the middle of the chaos, not after it.

Start anywhere. Use what you need. Leave the rest.

What changes:

Stop losing days to scrolling and shame spirals. Start recognizing patterns within minutes. Break through paralysis. Recover faster when you break. Become harder to manipulate, distract, or destabilize.

Incredibly helpful

I'm so grateful I found this workbook. It has helped me manage the overwhelm I'm feeling with everything going on. I go to protests, read the news, contact my legislators. Doing all the things. But the news is so overwhelming and I get very worked up and reactive. These exercises have been incredibly helpful for me. I know more about which things trigger me and how to interrupt when I begin to spiral. And the stuff around meeting myself with mercy and managing shame - wow. Thank you very much. This is a great workbook and I tell all my friends and everyone in my Indivisible group about the book and your blog.

Less overwhelmed, more effective

The toolkit has been extremely helpful. I like the ‘interrupt’ practices. And the last chapter with the Defiance Prayer is so hopeful. It has helped me focus on what matters while reducing time stuck in doomscrolling and worrying

Highly recommended

This toolkit is SO helpful! OMG, I've been so overwhelmed this past year with Trump back in office. I'm very active in resistance but it's been getting harder to keep focused and hopeful. This toolkit is exactly what I needed. I told everyone in my local Indivisible group to get one and we are now working through it together as a group. It helps us be stronger and more grounded for the long fight ahead
