The China Chapter

I was living the dream.

From the age of 16, when I decided to strive for greatness and become a lawyer, I dreamed of sitting in my own office, speaking to my own clients, and preparing submissions to appear in court.

I was admitted as an Australian Lawyer and Officer of the Supreme Court of Victoria on 19th February 2014, one of the most fulfilling moments of my life.

My first day in the office was met with a buzz that I have felt only once or twice.

I did it, the kid from a broken and recovered home, from a tiny unit in Reservoir to a 3 bedroom home in Mill Park.

Fast track three years and it’s October 2016.

Three years of experience, aged 25 years and the opportunity to steadily grow.

It’s exactly what I yearned for.

I didn't want it anymore.

I wanted to travel, and I wanted to work in sport.

I found myself often distracted, checking the NBA scores every spare chance that I could, reading articles on the AFL website and applying for sport jobs.

I would have a mental battle with myself daily, questioning why I would come into the office one day full of energy and a will to do my job one day, and the next day have a panic attack and burst into tears because I hated being there.

In 2012, I attended the Dafydd Lewis Trust Scholarship annual dinner, where I met Gil McLachlan. I told him at the time that I wanted to work in the sport industry one day, and his advice was to work in a general practice for three years, then make my way in somehow.

I yearned to work and travel internationally, but I had no idea how this would happen.

I took a chance in March 2017 and ventured off to China to teach English.

I ended up doing some incredible things, including making a big step into my dream life.
