The Ordnungspolizei, often abbreviated as Orpo, was a uniformed police force in Nazi Germany during the Third Reich. It was established in 1936 and was separate from the regular civilian police (Schutzpolizei). The primary function of the Ordnungspolizei was to maintain public order, enforce laws, and carry out routine policing tasks.

During its existence, the Ordnungspolizei played a significant role in various aspects of Nazi policies, including enforcing racial and anti-Semitic laws, suppressing dissent, and participating in the persecution and deportation of Jews and other targeted groups.

As the Nazi regime expanded its control over Europe during World War II, members of the Ordnungspolizei were often involved in occupying territories and assisting in the implementation of occupation policies. This involved collaborating with other Nazi organizations in carrying out repressive measures and atrocities against civilians.

The Ordnungspolizei was also involved in the mass shootings of Jews and other civilians in Eastern Europe as part of the Einsatzgruppen units. These units were responsible for carrying out some of the most brutal aspects of the Holocaust before extermination camps were fully operational.

It's important to note that after World War II, the Ordnungspolizei was disbanded, and its members were subject to legal proceedings for their involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Nuremberg Trials and other subsequent trials. Many members of the Ordnungspolizei were found guilty and sentenced for their actions during the Nazi regime.

Today, the Ordnungspolizei is remembered as an organization that played a significant role in supporting and enforcing the oppressive policies of the Nazi regime during one of the darkest periods in human history.
