The 1986 New York Giants were a machine. Bill Parcells, Phil Simms, and Lawrence Taylor — the MVP, one of only two defensive players to win the award — led a 14–2 team through the NFC playoffs without breaking a sweat. In Super Bowl XXI, Simms completed 22 of 25 passes for an 88% completion rate that still stands as a Super Bowl record. Final score: Giants 39, Broncos 20.
The AFC had its own story. Cleveland and Denver both went 11–5. Their AFC Championship clash produced one of the most famous drives in NFL history — John Elway, 98 yards, two minutes left, the crowd at Cleveland Municipal Stadium in full meltdown. The Broncos made it to Pasadena. The Giants ended them.
The Chicago Bears went 14–2 again. Nobody else in the NFC could stop them either.
