Walk into almost any gym and you'll see the same exercises being performed every day.
Bench press. Bicep curls. Lat pulldowns. Leg press.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with these exercises. They build strength, muscle, and fitness. But if you're a firefighter, search and rescue volunteer, coastguard, or RNLI crew member, there's an important question worth asking:
Are you training for your role, or are you simply training for training's sake?
The Difference Matters
Many emergency service workers spend hours in the gym each week, yet very little of their training resembles the demands they'll face when the pager goes off.
In the real world, nobody is going to ask you to lie on your back and bench press a casualty.
You won't be called to perform three sets of twelve bicep curls before carrying a stretcher across uneven ground.
You probably won't be sat comfortably on a machine isolating a single muscle group when someone needs help.
What you will be asked to do is move awkward loads, work in challenging environments, carry equipment, pull ropes, climb stairs, crawl through confined spaces, and perform physically demanding tasks while fatigued.
The question isn't whether your training is hard.
It's whether it's preparing you for the job.
The Reality of Emergency Service Work
Think about some of the physical demands involved in emergency response:
- Dragging hose reels and equipment.
- Carrying breathing apparatus.
- Moving casualties.
- Pulling rescue boats.
- Hauling ropes.
- Climbing ladders.
- Working on unstable terrain.
- Carrying medical kits over long distances.
- Repeatedly getting up and down from the floor.
- Performing tasks while wearing heavy PPE.
None of these movements happen in perfect conditions.
The load is rarely balanced.
The environment is rarely predictable.
The body doesn't care how much you bench press if you can't move efficiently under real-world conditions.
Strength Still Matters
This isn't an argument against traditional strength training.
Far from it.
A stronger individual is generally a more capable individual.
Strength provides the foundation for everything else.
Bench presses, squats, deadlifts, rows, and overhead presses all have a place in a well-rounded programme.
The problem arises when gym performance becomes the goal rather than the tool.
It's easy to become obsessed with numbers on a barbell while forgetting why you're training in the first place.
If your role requires physical capability, your training should reflect that.
From Gym Strength to Real-World Strength
The most effective training programmes bridge the gap between traditional strength work and occupational performance.
Instead of only asking:
"How much can I lift?"
Ask:
"How well can I apply my strength?"
For example:
A heavy sled pull with a rope may better replicate dragging equipment or pulling a casualty than another set of bench presses.
Farmer's carries may have greater carry-over to transporting kit bags, rescue equipment, or medical packs.
Sandbag carries can simulate awkward loads that don't come with convenient handles.
Stair climbs under load can prepare firefighters for carrying equipment through multi-storey buildings.
Sled pushes can develop the ability to generate force while moving heavy objects.
Battle rope pulls can replicate the repeated pulling actions involved in rope rescues and equipment retrieval.
These exercises don't replace traditional strength training.
They complement it.
Train Movement, Not Just Muscles
One of the biggest differences between gym-based training and operational work is that emergencies require movement.
You rarely stay in one position.
You move through space.
You change direction.
You carry things.
You work for extended periods.
You adapt.
This is why movement-based training deserves a place alongside traditional strength work.
Exercises such as:
- Loaded carries
- Sled pushes
- Sled pulls
- Crawling patterns
- Step-ups
- Lunges
- Sandbag work
- Rope pulls
Challenge the body in ways that are often far more reflective of operational demands.
Energy Systems Matter Too
Strength alone won't carry you through a prolonged incident.
Many emergency service personnel focus heavily on lifting weights but neglect cardiovascular fitness.
Operational work often requires repeated bouts of effort with limited recovery.
You may sprint to an incident, carry equipment, recover briefly, then repeat the process multiple times.
This is where conditioning becomes crucial.
Running, rowing, SkiErg work, loaded carries, circuits, and functional fitness sessions can help develop the ability to perform under fatigue.
Being strong is useful.
Being strong when you're exhausted is even more useful.
A Simple Test
Here's a challenge.
The next time you write your training programme, look at every exercise and ask:
"What aspect of my role does this prepare me for?"
Some exercises will have obvious answers.
Others may not.
If an exercise builds a physical quality you need, great.
If it's there simply because you've always done it, it may be worth reconsidering.
The goal isn't to make every workout look like an emergency incident.
The goal is to ensure your training develops qualities that improve your performance when it matters most.
The Best of Both Worlds
The most effective emergency service athletes don't choose between strength training and functional training.
They combine them.
They build strength in the gym.
They develop endurance through conditioning.
They improve movement through functional exercises.
And they regularly challenge themselves with tasks that resemble the demands of their role.
Because when the call comes, nobody cares what your bench press is.
They care whether you can carry the kit.
Pull the rope.
Move the casualty.
Climb the stairs.
And keep going when everyone else is tired.
Train for the role, not just for the gym.
Your body, and the people depending on you will thank you for it.
