"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27 NIV).
My Story
This verse reminds us of our inherent worth and purpose as God’s beloved creations.
Reflecting on my life, I see how much the world influenced my view of myself. At the time, I didn't realise how societal pressures, the pursuit of perfection in magazines, and the opinions of others shaped how I valued myself. I often tried to fit an unrealistic ideal, and it took me longer than I’d like to admit to recognise how this affected me.
I sometimes wish Sunday School had spent more time helping us understand that God genuinely delights in us. Instead, it often seemed to focus more on fear of sin and punishment.
During my final year at school, a careless comment about my ankles stayed with me far longer than it should have. Although the person probably forgot about it soon after saying it, the doubt it planted stayed with me and influenced how I saw myself for years.
Living with ongoing pain has given me a new appreciation for things I once took for granted, like the ability to walk, to hold a paintbrush, to simply be present with those I love. I’ve learned to be thankful for what my body can do, rather than fixate on its limitations.
Now, I aim to live healthily, but I no longer measure my worth by my appearance or physical ability. My true identity is anchored in who I am in Christ, which provides a strong foundation whenever doubts creep in.
God's Glory!
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” - 1 John 3:1 (NIV)
The world is quick to tell us we’re not enough. Not thin enough, strong enough, or beautiful enough. But that’s not who God says we are. It is important to know that how God sees us has nothing to do with our physical appearance. God has not simply tolerated you or accepted you reluctantly. His love has been lavished on you. Through Christ, you have been welcomed into His family and called His child.
When you remember this deep down, comparing yourself to others won’t have the same grip. Your confidence isn’t about what you see in the mirror or what others say about you; it’s about knowing you’re loved, chosen, and valued by God Himself.
Whenever self-doubt creeps in, remember that God calls you His own. Let that truth bring peace to your mind and calm your heart.
As you turn the pages of this book and enjoy the creative activities, may the colours remind you of the life God has given you. You are wonderfully made, deeply loved, and worth more than words can say.
Prayer
Father God, thank You for creating me with purpose and for helping me see myself through Your eyes. When I begin to doubt myself again, please remind me of who I am in You. Teach me to care for my body, appreciate it, and live with a grateful heart. Amen.
Shalom, Mariëtte Cilliers
