We the Living is based on the first novel written by Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead). Although a work of fiction, it was drawn from her experiences in the turbulent years following the Russian Revolution.

We the Liiving tells the story of Kira, a defiant young college student who meets a fugitive. The two fall in love and together embark on a fierce struggle to survive under an oppressive system. When a secret police agent also falls in love with Kira, the lives of all three intertwine and spiral toward disaster.

Produced in Rome during World War II, the movie was a sensation when first released. It became Italy's number one box office film of 1942. But dictator Benito Mussolini saw the film as a threat to his regime and ordered it to be banned. The film was thought to be forever lost but the original negatives were miraculously rediscovered in 1968. The film was meticulously restored in 2022 in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the movie's release.

An epic story of the unconquerable in the human spirit, We the Living is at its core a blazing declaration of the right of every human being to live free.
