Learning something new can be quite intimidating. It’s like stepping into a new adventure and not being sure how things will work out. However, learning a new skill can be easy if you are aware of your learning style. For example some people are visual learners, while others prefer listening to learn a new skill. So, what I am going to do for you in this blog post for you is highlight 7 ways you can enhance your learning skills regardless of your learning style. The best advice is to choose the skills that is most interesting to you.
Reading
This is an easy way to ingest new information. The trick to reading is to not spend hours binging information, which will leave you feeling exhausted and unmotivated to come back to the material you’ve read. Instead, find 10 minutes every day to read something that you are interested in learning more of. The 10 minutes you spend will keep you excited, and ready to come back for more information.
Immerse Yourself In A Skill
This is about taking action to learn something new. For example, if you were interested in learning how to cook, you can enroll in a 2 week course that shows you how to be hands on in the kitchen. This immersive experience does not need to be fancy. Simply taking a basic course on how to move around the kitchen, and learning about specific tools you need for cooking will suffice.
Adopt A Beginners Mind
A beginners mind is seeing things through the eyes of “doing it for the first time.” With this, you can act as if you have no experience, which means you leave all assumptions at the door. If you are ever interested in what this looks like, take for example children and their approach to life. Adopting a beginners mind will help you soak in information you wouldn’t have seen had you assumed knowing anything about the skill you are learning.
Post It Notes
A great way to enhance your learning skill is to see things repetitively, and this is good old fashion repetition. You can take an opportunity to write information on post it notes and place them around your house in places you spend the most time. An example, would be placing one in front of your mirror. Be mindful to not overwhelm yourself with too many post it notes, instead opt for 5-7 post its. Again, repetition is powerful when ingesting new information so, when you don’t want to spend too much time reading, post it.
Audio
Learning does not have to always be about what you see, it’s also what you hear consistently. After all, not everyone is a visual learner and some learn best through audio. You can enhance your learning skills by listening to new information from podcast’s, audio books, or perhaps you create your own recordings of information you can listen to periodically. When you are learning through audio, this becomes a great way to program you mind to new information, which reaches your subconscious mind.
Quiz
Quizzing yourself on new information is a fun way to enhance your learning. There are plenty of apps such as elevate or peak that will help you improve your learning. You can also get a friend involved to help quiz you on information you are learning. This also gives you an opportunity to connect with the information you are learning through interaction, and will later help you be able to recall the information easily.
Join A Group Discussion
Group discussions are a way to dive deep into particular topics. While you may not have the answers going into a group discussion, this is a great way to pick up on shared information. For example, if you are a part of a book club and have a question about something you learned yet didn’t quite understand the meaning, it’s a great way to gain clarity by finding out what others have to say for the benefit of your own understanding.
I hope this post has been insightful for you to begin learning a new skill or even taking on a new style of learning. Learning does not have to be intimidating yet it can be fun and exciting if you are willing to switch things up a bit and keep an open mind. Again, I hope something above resonated with you.
