Flower Bed word-search puzzle with 14 numbered rows and columns and 12 flower names to find.

How to Choose and Print an Easy Word Search

A readable word search needs more than a large title on the cover. Look at the letters inside the grid, the word list and the answers. Then check which directions the words can run. These details help you choose a puzzle you will enjoy solving.

Here is a short checklist, followed by a complete flower-themed example from our Easy Large-Print Word Searches collection.

1. Check the puzzle and the answer pages

Open a sample at the size you plan to use. Can you tell similar letters apart? Is the word list comfortable to read? Are there clear spaces between the rows? Check an answer page too: a large puzzle can still have a much smaller solution.

If you are printing a download, a test sheet tells you more than a zoomed-in picture on your phone. Screen size, zoom and printer scaling all affect what you see.

2. Read the direction rules first

“Easy” can mean different things. Some word searches use all eight directions; others use fewer. This example uses only three: right, down and diagonally down-right. There are no backward or upward words.

Letters may belong to more than one answer. When you circle a word, keep the letters readable so you can still use any crossing words.

3. Try Flower Bed

Find these 12 words:

ASTER, BEGONIA, DAHLIA, DAISY, IRIS, LUPINE, MARIGOLD, PANSY, PEONY, PETUNIA, TULIP, ZINNIA.

The grid has 14 rows and 14 columns. Start counting from the top-left corner. The image at the top of this guide shows the grid with row and column numbers. You can also open the free PDF sample linked below.

Try one method: choose a word, look for its first letter, and check the next letter in each allowed direction. Continue only when the letters match. Cross the word off the list after you have found the whole word.

Need a first find? IRIS begins on row 7, column 9 and runs right to column 12. Try another word before looking at the answer key below.

4. Print one page before the whole file

For a printable PDF, choose the version that matches your paper: US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches; A4 is 210 × 297 mm. Select that paper size in the print dialog and use portrait orientation and one page per sheet. Printing several puzzle pages on one sheet reduces the letters.

Start with Actual size or 100%, then check the preview for cropped edges. Adobe Acrobat's Actual size setting does not scale a page, and content outside the printable area can be cropped. If the preview cuts something off, Fit can help, but it changes the scale. Check the resulting text size on a test sheet before printing more.

Print a puzzle page and an answer page first. Look for complete edge letters, readable word lists and a clear solution. Printer margins, paper and ink vary. A digital preview does not establish how your particular printer will perform.
