IELTS Academic Reading is not simply a test of how well you understand English. You also need to find information quickly, recognise paraphrases and use the right strategy for different question types.
Here are 8 quick ways to make your reading more efficient and improve your score.
1. Don't read every word 📚
Don't try to understand every sentence before you look at the questions.
Do skim the passage first to understand the topic, structure and location of different information.
💡 Tip: Look at the title, headings and first sentence of each paragraph. You don't need to understand everything yet.
2. Read the questions carefully 👀
Don't rush straight into the passage.
Do identify the important words in each question and think about what you need to find.
💡 Tip: Underline names, dates, places and key nouns. These can help you locate the relevant part of the text.
3. Look for paraphrases 🔎
Don't expect the words in the question to be exactly the same as the words in the passage.
Do look for synonyms and different ways of expressing the same idea.
💡 Tip: If the question says “the effects of climate change”, the passage might talk about “the impact of a changing climate”.
4. Use the question order 📍
Don't assume you have to search the whole passage for every answer.
Do use the order of the questions when the question type follows the text.
💡 Tip: Once you've found one answer, start looking for the next one from that point. This can save a lot of time.
5. Learn the different question types 🧩
Don't use the same strategy for every question.
Do learn how to approach True/False/Not Given, Matching Headings, multiple choice, sentence completion, matching information and other question types.
💡 Tip: The strategy you use can make a big difference, especially when you're short of time.
6. Don't confuse False and Not Given ⚠️
Don't choose False simply because the passage doesn't mention something.
Do choose False when the passage gives information that contradicts the statement.
💡 Tip: Not Given means you cannot find enough information in the passage to say whether the statement is true or false.
7. Don't get stuck on one question ⏱️
Don't spend five minutes trying to find one difficult answer.
Do make your best choice, move on and come back to it later if you have time.
💡 Tip: Every question is worth one mark, so don't sacrifice several easier questions for one difficult one.
8. Check your answers carefully ✍️
Don't finish the test and immediately put your pencil down.
Do use any remaining time to check spelling, grammar and word limits.
💡 Tip: In completion questions, check that your answer fits grammatically into the sentence and follows the instructions exactly.
