8 quick ways to boost your IELTS Speaking score 🗣️

1. Answer the question directly 🎯

Don’t give a memorised speech that doesn’t really answer the question.

Do answer the question first, then explain your answer or give an example.

đź’ˇ Tip: A simple structure is Answer + Why + Example.

2. Give more than a one-sentence answer đź’¬

Don’t stop after “Yes, I do” or “No, I don't.”

Do develop your answers with reasons, details and examples.

💡 Tip: Imagine the examiner asks you “Why?” after every answer. Give them the extra information before they have to ask.

3. Speak naturally, not perfectly 🌱

Don’t try to use complicated grammar or vocabulary in every sentence.

Do use language you can control confidently and naturally.

💡 Tip: A few small mistakes are much better than long pauses while you search for a “Band 9” word.

4. Use a range of vocabulary 🧠

Don’t repeat the same basic words again and again.

Do use different words and phrases when you know they are appropriate.

đź’ˇ Tip: Learn useful collocations and topic vocabulary, rather than long lists of synonyms.

5. Extend your answers in Part 2 ⏱️

Don’t panic if you think you have nothing to say.

Do use the bullet points on the task card to organise your ideas, then add details, reasons, examples and personal experiences.

đź’ˇ Tip: If you finish early, talk about how, why, when, where or who. These questions can help you keep going.

6. Keep talking when you make a mistake 🔄

Don’t stop completely because you made a grammar or vocabulary mistake.

Do correct yourself quickly if necessary, then keep going.

💡 Tip: You can say “I mean...” or simply restart the sentence. Don't let one mistake affect the rest of your answer.

7. Use linking phrases naturally đź”—

Don’t force phrases such as “Firstly, secondly, moreover and furthermore” into every answer.

Do use natural spoken expressions such as “Actually...”, “The main reason is...”, “For example...” and “On the other hand...”

đź’ˇ Tip: Think about connecting ideas, not showing off your linking words.

8. Practise speaking out loud 🎙️

Don’t spend all your preparation time reading vocabulary lists or writing model answers.

Do practise answering questions aloud, preferably while recording yourself.

đź’ˇ Tip: Listen back and check your fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Then try the same question again and improve your answer.
