The Holiday Production Series

The things we celebrate hold more than we remember. Every holiday carries history, and modern life moves so fast that it's easy to keep the celebration while the meaning slips out of view. This series is my way of bringing that meaning back to the table, through the Black American experience of the days we gather around.

Each production is a short musical for young performers, written so even the smallest child can understand it, relate to it, and carry it home. There's no villain in these stories. Each one moves forward as people share what they've been holding, until a young person sees how connected we have always been. Most of the shows close with the whole company and audience singing "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing."

The shows are built to be staged in churches, schools, and community centers, and each one runs about 30 to 35 minutes.

Every license includes:

  • the full script
  • a director's guide
  • vocal demo and performance tracks for every song
  • sheet music for selected numbers
  • All original songs

Licensing is $25 per copy. $275 for the entire collection.

A Christmas & Kwanzaa musical for young performers from The Holiday Series

It is the first Christmas since Daddy passed. Ten-year-old Amari believes the tree and Daddy's hand-carved kinara are taking turns with the living room now, and that only one of them gets to win. Over three days, from Christmas Eve to the first night of Kwanzaa, each person in the family discloses something Daddy left in their hands: his wooden stars, his word for Nana, his handmade-gift rule, his reason for lighting the center candle. On December 26, Amari lights the first candle and sees it was one room the whole time.

A Watch Night & New Year's musical for young performers from The Holiday Series

It is New Year's Eve at Shiloh Grove Baptist Church, in a small Southern town where everything runs late, including the courthouse clock, which has run four minutes slow for thirty years. Eleven-year-old Micah has been brought to Watch Night instead of a countdown party and wants to know why anybody celebrates something new in the coldest, darkest part of the year. Over the two hours before midnight, Doc Whitfield, a retired HBCU biology professor, hands Micah the answer in pieces: the first Watch Night in 1862, the light that turned on the longest night, the frost that sweetens the greens, the seed asleep in a black-eyed pea. When the late clock strikes, Micah answers the question for the whole church.
