Activities for Exploring the World - The Wonders of Street View

This is a really nice website called The Wonders of Street View: https://neal.fun/wonders-of-street-view/

It is based around some of the most interesting places on Google Street View. By clicking the link you are taken to a random place. You can then move around the place and explore. This is great to get students exploring the world and finding out more about other places and cultures.

If your students have phones of digital devices, you can share the link with them or show them a QR code. And they will all be taken to one of the places.

Here are some activities they can do with this:

  • Get students to open the link, look around and write down/ brainstorm ten words related to what they see. They can then use the words to describe the place (either writing a text or they can describe it to a partner).
  • If you put students into small groups they can each describe the place they can see (they shouldn't show their screen to the others) and then try to persuade the other students in their group that they should go there. The group then decides on one place to visit together. Once they have decided they can look at each others' screens and see if they are happy that they made the best choice.
  • Get students to open the link and give them two minutes to explore. Once the two minutes are finished they should tell their partner/group/the class what they saw.
  • Get each student to open the link and then research the place to find out which is the farthest away from them and how to get there.
  • Get pairs of students to open the link and then try to find as many things as possible that the two places have in common.
  • Get students to move around the place and write a monologue or story about a person searching for something in that place.
