I'm Kent Bernard, founder of AlphaWay LLC.

Before I ever opened the Uber app, I spent 20+ years in enterprise program management for Fortune 100 companies. I know what a real operating system looks like, and I know the difference between a job and a business.

I started driving Uber between contracts and during big events in Houston like Rodeo and FIFA World Cup. In 2015–2016 Uber paid differently but there were many restrictions. Today the payouts are lower, but drivers have more flexibility and more available information to control their business. I quickly realized there was a need for a system so that I was not just taking orders from the app and wasting time with low paying rides. There was no written system — not for shortcuts, just for how to manage your driving session, understanding the app and the information it provides, so that I could make the most money possible.

I started tracking my sessions to see any trends from the Uber app. I studied the ride offers, ride pricing, and other features and information. I mixed in tips from other full time drivers. I made changes to my behavior and the numbers changed.

The Inside Lane is that operating system, written down — field-validated alongside AnnG and Donovan, two full-time Houston operators who ran it before I ever called it anything.
