So there I am.
Park bench.
Museum Gardens.
Yorkshire Museum looming Infront of me.
Minding my own business.
Looking cool n shit.
And wouldn’t you know it… another beauty walks up.
“Is it alright if I sit here?”
Absolutely.
Meet Mia-lin.
She’s got that energy—you know, the kind of stranger you just know is going to drop a gem or two on you.
Turns out her grandson is inside wandering the museum, and she’s stationed herself outside with me as her audience.
We get to talking.
Family.
Travel.
Politics.
She asks, “What brings you to York?”
I give her the lowdown.
She nods, then tells me her granddaughter will be in town tomorrow.
Like she’s just casually dropping hints.
Classic Mia-lin, always another character ready to enter stage left.
Then the gems start dropping
"I always told my children
Travel as much as you can.
Experience the world.
Take care of themselves.”
Damn. Slow down bby girl.
This woman has lived.
You can feel it.
I ask about her grandson:
“What does he look like?”
“22. Clean shave. 6’4.”
Okay, Mia-lin, you could’ve just said tall, dark, and handsome. 😏
We laugh.
I offer to whistle at him when he comes out, or wave him down, while flailing my arms in the air.
She does it too.
We laugh some more.
Or... I could hold you up like Rose from the Titanic.
She smiles and shakes her head:
“I don’t think that would be appropriate.”
Touché.
Then she hits me with it: “How old do you think I am?”
Shooters gonna shoot:
37.
She laughs. “85.”
She wears it well.
“You remind me of Luke,” she says.
I don’t know who Luke is. But I think I want to.
Eventually, our hour as passed.
Her grandson Theo appears.
And just before they leave, she slips in the smoothest line:
“We should exchange numbers In case you want to join us later or for coffee sometime.”
Then she adds, “It’s alright if you don’t.” (Pro move. That’s how you get buy-in.)
I offer to put it in her phone.
She only types with her pointer finger, but Shawty's got game.
“Theo, how do I pull up my contact card to share?”
Fell right into her "make him lead" trap card.
I snap a photo of her contact card.
First name.
Last name.
Mobile.
Home phone.
The whole deal.
“On the off chance you’d like to grab coffee or meet up later.”
And then she pulls the ultimate grandma move.
Marches me straight to the museum entrance.
“This is my grandson,” she declares like she fucking owns the museum.
Everybody nods as if they were saying "yeah, checks out"
And boom, I’m in for free.
I ask Mia-lin for a hug goodbye, making eye contact with Theo over her shoulder like it’s the final scene of a film.
And as she leaves, she turns back with that glimmer in her eye.
