Ep 0: What J is Watching

*pats S on the helmet* My turn sweetie.

Fact is, we've both been taking a tour of the recent Crunchyroll's absorption (very conflicted about this) of Funimation's old catalog. Perhaps predictably, I settled on Starblazers 2199 and it's sequel series, 2202.

First, let me say that these are entered in a screwed up way, as two seasons of the same show. They aren't. They're totally separate series and should be treated as such for stream purposes. It still grinds my gears that it took five tries to get to the end credits of the final 2199 episode. As a first-generation Yamato fangirl, let me say you MUST experience the proper end of 2199 and not just skip to first ep of 2202. The emotional payoff is EPIC.

Especially since, I will say it, 2202 is something of a letdown. The whole series has a rather ridiculous obsession with defining 'love' and 'bonds' in a way that utterly detracts from the actual story. The result is a philosophical mess more befitting a Gundam spinoff than Yamato. (Play nice dear- S)

All that aside, if you've never seen either of the modern Yamato television series, I wholeheartedly recommend them, warts and all. Hopefully with the news that the latest entry, 2205, is getting a TV airing in Japan before the upcoming "3199 Rebel" airs, we may even get a streaming release of the surprising and deeply and entertaining 2205 episodes.

In the next post, I'll give a more detailed breakdown of 2199, and my thoughts on it.

Later, My Lovelies!
