From Empty Room to Fully Operational Lab Without the Trial and Error

Built by Philip Habashy, MSc, Biological Sciences Lab Management & Biosafety Specialist — from real, hands-on lab commissioning experience.

About Me

I still remember what it felt like to walk into a lab for the first time — not knowing where anything was, unsure who to ask, quietly worried about getting something wrong. Over the years, as I moved from student to research assistant to lab manager, I found myself becoming the person other people came to with exactly those worries. Across multiple labs, I've had the chance to train and mentor more than 40 people — students learning their very first technique, postdocs settling into a new environment, staff navigating a system that had just changed under them. I liked being that person for all of them. There's something quietly meaningful about helping someone feel steady in a space that used to intimidate them.

Along the way I got to build things from nothing — write the SOPs before they existed, stand up systems where there were only gaps, and once, help lead a whole lab through the process of getting properly certified. None of that happens by accident. It happens because someone cared enough to build the scaffolding, and because enough people trusted that scaffolding to learn on it.

This guide is that scaffolding, written down. I made it because I know what it's like to stand in an empty lab space with a stack of regulations and no idea where to start — and because I believe no PI should have to learn all of this the hard way, alone, the way so many of us did.

What's In The Guides?

Whether you're setting up your first lab or want a complete system to run it well from day one, there's a starting point here for you.

The Stage 1 guide is a comprehensive, self-contained reference covering everything a new PI needs to understand — the regulatory landscape, funding pathways, equipment procurement, contamination control, personnel training, and the systems that keep a lab running long after it opens.

The Complete Kit builds on that foundation with four hands-on implementation workbooks — walking you step by step through space and equipment commissioning, full biosafety and SOP implementation, team onboarding and training, and ongoing operational management — so you're not just informed, you're set up to execute without the trial and error.
