Bobbles!

I've mucked around with Tunisian Crochet bobbles quite a lot. It came about when I bought some colour pooling yarn from Three Mums yarn at the 2021 NSW Knitters Guild Gathering. Sadly, Three Mums Yarn is no more - their colour pooling was a lot of fun!

I wanted to feature that beautiful pink colour pop amongst the lovely soft grey. So instead of just making a flat fabric, I thought this would be the perfect style of yarn for a 'stop, drop, bobble' style garment.

Turns out that yes, it was perfect for that! I ended up using this yarn as one of three prototypes for my Ginan jumper which was published in the amazing Moorit magazine.

How to make bobbles

Bobbles add fabulous texture to Tunisian Crochet. This bobble method uses Tunisian double crochet (tdc) stitches and gathers them into a popcorn style bobble. This isn't the only way to make bobbles, but it's my favourite.

Bobbles are a feature in my Bobble Cowls and Ginan. These patterns use assigned colour pooling yarn. Each time you get to the pop of colour in the skein, you make a bobble.

Yarn requirements
You need to use variegated yarn. You can use assigned colour pooling yarn or colour popped yarn (a section of contrasting colour in your skein).

Hook
A cabled hook is required.
All samples were made in 5.5mm aluminium @Catch_hooks hook with a Chiagoo cable.

This product is a pattern for a Tunisian Crochet jumper.

Ginan is a clever Tunisian crochet jumper designed to be made with assigned colour pooling yarn. Colourful bobbles look like scattered stars, and the colour carried within the return pass becomes the tail of a shooting star.
