Who is God?

Throughout history, humans have worshipped numerous gods and goddesses (some probably had flashier robes), while the Bible emphasizes the supremacy of one God, who is described as "greater than all other gods."—and thankfully, He doesn’t need a PR team or temple snack budget. (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2021, p. 17)

2 Chronicles 2:5, “The house that I am building will be great, for our God is greater than all the other gods.” (2 Chronicles 2:5, New World Translation)

In the pages of the Bible, God makes known that his name is Jehovah (and yes, He doesn’t need a catchy nickname or Instagram handle) — a name so powerful, even your autocorrect won’t dare mess with it. (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2021, p. 17)

Isaiah 42:5,8, “This is what the true God, Jehovah, says, The Creator of the heavens and the Grand One who stretched them out, The One who spread out the earth and it’s produce, The One who gives breath to the people on it And spirit to those who walk on it. I am Jehovah. That is my name; I give my glory to no one else, Nor my praise to graven images.” (Isaiah 42:5,8, New World Translation)

Jehovah translates from a Hebrew name (Yahweh) meaning "He Causes to Become." (basically, the ultimate life coach—no motivational quotes needed). (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2021, p. 17)

Exodus 3:13-15, “But Moses said to the true God: “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your forefathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is his name?’ What should I say to them?’ So God said to Moses: “I Will Become What I Choose to Become.” And he added: “This is what you are to say to the Israelites, ‘I Will Become has sent me to you.’” “Then God said once more to Moses: “This is what you are to say to the Israelites, ‘Jehovah the God of your forefathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered from generation to generation.” (Exodus 3:13-15, New World Translation)

God's desire for us to know his name is evident in its occurrence over 7,000 times in the Bible (clearly, He’s not subtle—He’s basically shouting “Remember my name!”)(Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2021, p. 17)

Deuteronomy 4:39, “Know, therefore, on this day, and take it to heart that Jehovah is the true God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. There is no other.” (Deuteronomy 4:39, New World Translation)

The Bible states that amidst the multitude of gods worshipped by humanity, Jehovah stands as the sole true God (and thankfully, He doesn’t need a fan club or a hype team). This declaration is reinforced by several reasons: Jehovah holds supreme authority, and he alone is recognized as "the Most High over all the earth."—the ultimate boss of bosses. (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2021, p. 17)

Psalms 83:18, “May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.” (Psalms 83:18, New World Translation)

He is known as "the Almighty," indicating his ability to accomplish anything he desires (no to-do list is too long for Him). He is the creator of all things, including the universe and all life on Earth—talk about a boss-level project manager. (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2021, p. 17)

Revelations 4:8, 11, “As for the four living creatures, each one of them had six wings; they were full of eyes all around and underneath. And continuously day and night, they say: “Holy, holy, holy is Jehovah God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is coming.” You are worthy, Jehovah our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power, because you created all things, and because of your will they came into existence and were created.” (Revelations 4:8, 11, New World Translation)

Jehovah's existence is distinct from all others, as he has existed since the beginning and will endure for eternity (He’s the original time traveler—no DeLorean needed)(Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2021, p. 17)

Psalms 90:2, “Before the mountains were born Or you brought forth the earth and the productive land, From everlasting to everlasting, you are God.” (Psalms 90:2, New World Translation)

God is referred to by various titles, yet He is known by one name (because even with all those nicknames, one name gets the crown). The Bible acknowledges that people worship various gods and lords. Nonetheless, Jehovah is described as "the God of gods" and "the Lord of lords"—the ultimate VIP in the spiritual world. (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2021, p. 17)

Psalms 136:1-3, “Give thanks to Jehovah, for he is good; His loyal love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods, For his loyal love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords, For his loyal love endures forever.” (Psalms 136:1-3, New World Translation)

Jehovah desires that people know his name and actively use it. After all, it’s mentioned thousands of times—He clearly doesn’t believe in being a “mystery guest.” You could say He really put His name on everything—more thorough than a grandma with a label maker. (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2021, p. 17)

Romans 10:13, “For “everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved.” (Psalms 90:2, New World Translation)

Jehovah desires for you to develop a closer relationship with him. Think of it as the ultimate “friend request”—but unlike social media, He won’t ghost you, unfriend you, or suddenly post cryptic status updates. (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2021, p. 17)

James 4:8a, “Draw close to God, and he will draw close to you.” (James 4:8a, New World Translation)
