Who Am I?
You may be wondering who I am and why I think I know so much on this subject, so let me introduce myself.
My name is Laura, I’m from the UK and I first stepped foot in a gym in Australia in 2010. That’s right, I had to go to the other side of the world to visit a gym-savvy friend to actually have the courage to step foot in a gym for the first time. I’d been a cyclist, a runner and finally couldn’t put off trying weight training.
At first I spent a good while working out in my bedroom, using water bottles as weights – and I LOVED it – but eventually I needed more. I joined many gyms large and small in London during my years living there and even got myself so hooked that I couldn’t resist the pull of the iron during my time travelling in Central and South America. Believe me, walking into very local, close knit, iron shack gyms is an absolutely nerve wracking, self-conscious, OMG-I-shouldn’t-even-be-here experience. Especially after buying a day pass from a confused man who didn’t fully understand my terrible Spanish and was probably wondering if I had confused the gym with a local museum.
Through all this, I found my footing and inner confidence and I continue to build on this today during my new life in Peru.
I have gone on to compete in calisthenics and bodybuilding and am proud to call myself a regional champion of calisthenics and Body Fitness (figure) silver medal holder - and this is only the beginning.
