Don't Do This - 9 Coffee Shop Etiquette Tips from a Barista turned Entrepreneur

If you’re like me, you love hunting down the best coffee shops to get work done, soak up the vibe, and sip great coffee. Having spent years in the coffee world and now enjoy working from coffee shops, I’ve noticed some things that can make or break your coffee shop work session—for you, the baristas, and everyone else around.

Here are my top 9 etiquette tips to keep your coffee shop visits smooth, productive, and enjoyable for everyone.

1. Headphones Are Your Best Friend

I get it, sometimes you need to take a call or watch a quick video. Just please use headphones!

Coffee shops are cozy, can be echo-y, and sound travels way more than you think. Loud calls or videos can totally kill the chill vibe that helps us focus. If you have to chat, stepping outside for a minute is a huge lifesaver for everyone else. Also, everyone is listening in since they can hear everything going on, so if you want privacy, please go outside or put on ear buds and talk quieter.

2. Know What You Want Before You Order

Coffee menus aren’t always super simple, and it’s fun to try new things, but don’t hold up the line trying to decide when there’s a crowd waiting. Take a peek at the menu online or while you wait in line. Holding up the line also wastes everyone else's time, so please be mindful.

Trust me, this helps the baristas keep things moving, and you get your drink faster.

3. Keep Your Line Chats Short and Sweet

Coffee shops are social—especially around here—but when there’s a line, try to keep chit-chat quick.

A friendly “Hey, how’s your day going?” goes a long way, but save the weekend stories for when you’re not holding up a crowd behind you.

4. Have Your Payment Ready to Go

Nothing slows the line down like people fumbling for their wallet or phone at the register. Have your payment method ready before it’s your turn, whether it’s cash, card, or Apple Pay. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference for respecting everyone’s time.

5. Be Mindful of Kids and Noise

Coffee shops are family-friendly, which is awesome! Just keep an eye on little ones so they don’t run wild near hot machines or disturb folks trying to concentrate. Like I mentioned before, it gets very echo-y. If your kiddo are loud or gets fussy, stepping outside for a bit is totally okay and appreciated.

6. Solo? Pick a Seat That Fits

Flying solo? Try not to snag the biggest table during busy times. Smaller tables or the counter work just fine and make room for groups or families who need space. And if you’re already at a big table and see someone waiting, consider moving, or invite them to sit with you. Who knows, you could make a new friend or connection!

7. Share Outlets When You Can

Outlets are gold for remote workers. If your battery’s full, consider sitting away from outlet spots so others can plug in. And if you’re using one and see someone else needing it, sharing is caring and it’s super appreciated.

8. Call Ahead for Big Orders

Got a big order for the office or a team? Calling ahead saves a lot of stress for everyone. Baristas can prep in advance, so you’re not holding up the line while they make lots of drinks. Besides, you can get in and out faster too.

9. Use Common Sense and Be Considerate

Coffee shops aren’t just your office, they’re shared spaces.

Keep it classy. No clipping nails (yes, I've seen this), loud personal convos, or camping out all day buying only one small coffee. If you’re there for hours, support the shop by ordering something now and then, clean up after yourself, and treat the space like you want others to treat it.

Why It All Matters

When everyone keeps these simple rules in mind, coffee shops stay welcoming and productive places for all of us. Happy customers make for happy baristas, which means better coffee and service for you. It’s a win-win!
