Unclaimed Money Is Real: How I Found Over $2,000 in Minutes

Have you ever heard of unclaimed money? It might sound too good to be true, but trust me—it’s real. I thought the same thing when my husband first mentioned it. Honestly, I was skeptical. But he convinced me to check, and to my surprise, I found over $2,000 waiting for me—dating all the way back to 2018!

The best part? It only took minutes to check, and I had the money in hands within a month!

In this blog post, I’ll walk you through exactly how I did it, how you can check if you have money waiting for you, and how to avoid scams. Plus, I’ll share why I believe this money didn’t just appear by chance—I manifested it! If you're interested in learning more about manifesting abundance, I’ll add a link to another article where I dive deeper into that.

What Is Unclaimed Money?

Unclaimed money is money that belongs to you but was never collected. This could be:

  • Refunds from insurance, utilities, or security deposits
  • Uncashed paychecks
  • Forgotten bank accounts
  • Stocks or dividends
  • Overpaid bills
  • Tax refunds that were never received

When companies or organizations owe you money and can’t reach you, they send it to the state’s treasury department. The state holds onto it until you claim it.

How I Found Over $2,000 in Unclaimed Money

I live in New Jersey, so I went straight to the official state website to check if I had any unclaimed funds.

To my surprise, I had money from different sources dating back to 2018. The process was incredibly easy:

  1. I entered my name into the search bar on the New Jersey unclaimed property website.
  2. I saw a list of unclaimed funds under my name and verified which ones belonged to me.
  3. I submitted my claim by providing proof of my identity (a copy of my ID and a few other details).
  4. I waited not even a month, and the money was deposited into my account!

It was honestly one of the easiest ways I’ve ever received money. No complicated forms, no fees—just a simple check to see what was already mine.

How You Can Check for Unclaimed Money

No matter where you live, you might have unclaimed money waiting for you. Here’s how to check safely:

Method 1: Go Through Your State’s Official Website

Each state has a treasury department that manages unclaimed property. Here’s how to find yours:

  1. Go to MissingMoney.com (a site endorsed by most state governments).
  2. Enter your name and state to see if you have any unclaimed money.
  3. If you find a match, follow the instructions to submit a claim through your state’s official website.

***It’s important to mention that they call it 'Unclaimed Property,' but this has nothing to do with owning a house, business, or any kind of physical real estate. I’ve had people ask me about this before, so I want to clarify—when they say 'property,' they’re referring to financial assets that belong to you but have been forgotten or unclaimed. This can include things like old paychecks, refunds, insurance payouts, utility deposits, or even dormant bank accounts. It’s money that is rightfully yours but hasn’t been collected yet.

If you find your name on the unclaimed property website but don’t see an amount listed, don’t worry! You’ll receive a confirmation email with the exact amount once your claim is processed. During the application, you’ll also be asked if you are 'the owner of the property.' This simply means they’re confirming that the name listed belongs to you and ensuring that you’re not filing on behalf of someone else.

Additionally, you will need to provide personal information such as your Social Security number and other identifying details. This is completely normal and part of the verification process. However, if the address listed on the website is an old one and you no longer live there, be sure to enter your current address when filling out the application, as there isn’t an option to update it directly on the site. If you run into any issues or have questions, you can always contact the service number provided on the website for assistance.

Method 2: Check Through Credit Karma (Safer Option)

If you have a Credit Karma account, you can check for unclaimed money right from there. This is a great option because it helps you avoid scams. Here’s how:

  1. Log into your Credit Karma account.
  2. Go to the "Money" tab (on the app or website).
  3. Scroll down to "Unclaimed Money."
  4. Click "Check Now" to see if there are funds under your name.
  5. Follow the steps to claim your money through your state’s official site.

Watch Out for Scams

While unclaimed money is real, scams are also very real. Here’s how to protect yourself:

  • Never pay a fee to claim your money. Your state treasury will never charge you.
  • Only use official government websites like your state’s treasury website or MissingMoney.com.
  • Avoid unsolicited emails or calls claiming you have money. Scammers often pretend to be from the government.

If someone contacts you saying they can help you get unclaimed money for a fee, it’s a scam. You can do it yourself for free!

This Wasn’t Just Luck—It Was Manifestation

Finding over $2,000 in unclaimed money wasn’t just luck. I believe it was part of my journey to abundance. Before I even knew about this money, I had been focusing on manifesting financial abundance into my life.

I talk more about manifestation in another blog post, but in short, I believe that when you open yourself up to receiving abundance, opportunities start appearing. Sometimes, that abundance shows up in unexpected ways—like finding money that was always yours but had been waiting for you to claim it.
