I'm David Heiby, the historian behind Gravestone Stories.

For more than twelve years, I've been researching the historic burial grounds of Alexandria, Virginia — reading the stones, the church registers, the city archives, and the newspapers to recover the lives resting beneath one of America's most historic cities. What began as curiosity became a mission: documenting all 37 of Alexandria's historic cemeteries and burial grounds, from the great churchyards of the founding era to the lost and hidden sites known only through research.

The e-books here are the result — a series of illustrated volumes covering Alexandria's Revolutionary War patriots, the cemeteries of the Wilkes Street Complex, the Civil War and USCT heroes of Alexandria National Cemetery, and more. Each volume is built on primary sources: burial registers, gravestone inscriptions transcribed exactly as carved, service records, and family papers. These aren't retold legends — they're documented history, presented so that visitors, researchers, and descendants can walk among these stones and know who lies beneath them.

When I'm not in the archives, I'm in the cemeteries themselves, leading guided walking tours through Alexandria's burial grounds. Every book here began as a story told standing beside a grave.
