1. Too many bans.
Many diet plans for type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance pay much more attention to what should be avoided than what a person can actually prepare and eat. You get a long list of foods to limit or eliminate, but when it comes time for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a special occasion, you run out of concrete ideas.
This is exactly where the problem arises. It is not enough to tell someone what they should not eat. It is necessary to show them how to make a meal from the ingredients available to them that is tasty, practical and adapted to their way of eating.
This becomes even more difficult during holidays and celebrations. Then we don't just eat what we eat every day. On the table are traditional dishes, cakes, desserts and food that we associate with certain occasions.
If the diet plan does not have any specific suggestions for such situations, people can easily get the impression that they have to choose between sticking to their diet and enjoying the food they like.
A good nutrition plan should therefore not only tell you what to eliminate. It should give you an idea of what to do.
2. Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance (IR) are not the reason for food to become boring.
When someone is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or has insulin resistance, they can very easily get the impression that from that moment on, food must be strict, monotonous and without enjoyment. It's as if the choice comes down to a few "safe" foods that are constantly repeated.
However, taking into account the choice of food and the quantity does not mean that food has to lose its taste, variety and what makes us look forward to it.
The goal is not for every meal to be "perfect".
The goal is for the nutrition to be practical, varied and sustainable enough to coexist with real life.
3. The problem arises when you have to choose.
The problem is not only in the food itself, but in the way of thinking that is easily developed when you constantly hear what you "shouldn't do". People begin to believe that they have only two options: either they will eat what they like and "spoil everything", or they will completely give up the food they enjoy.
Such an approach is difficult to sustain for a long time, for most people. Life is not made up only of meals that fit perfectly into a pre-made plan.
There are holidays, birthdays, family gatherings, guests and days when you simply want to do something special. One special occasion does not have to mean that you must give up your nutrition.
That is why it is more useful to think about how to fit your favorite food into your nutrition instead of seeing it as "allowed" or "forbidden".
A special occasion can be just that - special, without having to feel like you've ruined everything because of it.
4. Holidays are a special problem.
If you have type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance, that doesn't mean the holidays have to look like any other day. You don't have to choose between completely ignoring what is important to you in your nutrition and giving up holiday food.
There are still birthdays, Easter, Christmas, Valentine's Day, family gatherings and ordinary days when you simply want to do something special. The desire for a cake or a nice dessert does not disappear because you have type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.
That is why it is important to have ideas that allow special foods to fit into the daily nutrition, instead of automatically seeing them as something that is completely forbidden.
The goal is not to promise you that some recipe will solve type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.
The goal is to offer ideas for holiday food that you can fit into your nutrition, instead of a special occasion automatically meaning giving it up completely.
