The Weight of One Phone Call

Some people understand what it means to lose a parent, some don’t.

In 7 days, it will be my father’s birthday, October 6th. He would’ve been 56. My head aches and my heart feels heavy. There’s no timeline for grief, especially when the person you’ve lost shaped who you are in ways too many to measure.

One moment, you’re laughing, living, present. The next, you’re drowning in memories, wondering what could have been if they were still here. Some people know the weight of one life-changing phone call, the kind that flips everything upside down.

We don’t get to choose the cards we’re dealt. But we do choose how we respond. How we carry the pain. How we let it shape us.

Some days, it’s simple: breathe. Keep moving. Keep showing up for yourself. Other days, the memories hit so hard it’s all you can do to stay standing. That’s okay. That’s real.

If you’ve ever felt lost, stuck, or like no one truly understands what you’re carrying, know this: you’re not alone.

Grief isn’t just sorrow. It’s a reminder of love, of connection, of what truly mattered. And even when it hurts, it can teach resilience, depth, and strength.

Remember who you are. Remember the love that shaped you. And keep going.
